Overview of the resident research proposal document

Parts of the Proposal Document

Research Project Title

  • This should be descriptive of your project
  • Include what type of study
(retrospective or cohort or prospective, etc)
  • Avoid being "cutsy" or clever with the title

Research Goal

  • Express in a clear, concise fashion the broad primary research goal of the project
  • What is the research question that you seek to answer?
  •         Start with a good research question
  • If applicable, express in a clear, concise fashion the hypothesis to be tested.

Specific Aims

  • This is where you can be a bit more granular with some of the details
  • List what the specific research proposed in this application is intended to accomplish
  • The aims should be stated in a clear, concise fashion and include the relationship to the overall goal

Background Section

  • Briefly provide an overview of the literature you've found related to your study goal, and state how your study will contribute to addressing the problem.
  • The purpose of this section is to support the significance of the proposed research and methodology by reviewing relevant literature in the area of interest.
  • Detail background of literature that provides justification for effect size & provide background information or other information relevant to the study question.

Significance Section

How will your study contribute to the existing body of knowledge for your topic area?

What makes your study different from other studies done?

Concisely state the importance of health relevance of the research described in this application by relating the specific aims to the broad, long-term objectives.

Specifically identify the gaps in literature that the project is intended to fill.

Preliminary Studies and/or Data

What have you found so far?

Provide an overview of relevant preliminary data gathered by you.

Feasibility: if applicable, provide numbers of study eligible subjects from the appropriate study population and, if required, control population sources.

Use this section to help establish the experience and competence of the investigator to pursue the proposed project.

Preliminary data often aid the reviewers in assessing the likelihood of the success of the proposed project.

Supplementary background graphs, diagrams, tables, charts relevant to the preliminary studies may also be submitted in the appendix. However, if such material is essential to an evaluation of the research plan, incorporate it in the body of the application.

Research Design and Methods

  • Describe the research design and the procedures to be used to accomplish the specific aims of the project.
  • Include how the data will be collected, analyzed, and interpreted as well as the data sharing plan as appropriate.
  • Discuss the potential difficulties and limitations of the proposed procedures and alternative approaches to achieve the aims.
  • ORCA staff will help you to determine these items

Title Examples

Procalcitonin to predict complicated diverticulitis and need for intervention: a retrospective review.

Topical Corticosteroid Counseling: Measuring the Counseling Practice Gap between Dermatologists and Pharmacists.

Impact on Temporal Disease Flaring following Exposure to Systemic Glucocorticoids in Patients with a History of Psoriasis.

Research Goal Examples

Our goal is to obtain evidence that ordering an ANA alone as an initial screening test will result in cost savings without compromising patient care outcomes.

Our goal is to determine the rate of patient readmission to the MCHS – MMC following pancreaticoduodenectomy.

To compare and contrast post-transcatheter aortic valve replacement experience of first generation self-expanding valves versus second generation balloon expandable valves.

Specific Aims Examples

We will determine the relationship between readmission rate and patient demographics and comorbidities, diagnosis, operative variables, and postoperative course.

To compare the routes of administration of systemic corticosteroids for those patient experiencing psoriasis flares following systemic corticosteroid administration.

To determine and compare the length of ICU/hospital stay,  myocardial infarction, and stroke between patients requiring permanent PPM and other cohorts without pacemaker at 30 days and 1-year following TAVR procedure.

Preliminary Data

  • Feasibility data can be gathered prior to submitting your completed proposal.
  • ORCA (Office of Research Computing & Analytics) staff can meet with you to discuss your project and run some initial data requests. Purpose of this feasibility is to determine if enough data exists to address your research question.

Project Timeline

Include a timeline that reflects the project activities and notes the time allotted per activity.

Use "Month 1" rather than "March" as projects dotes are somewhat uncertain.

Month 1: Present project to resident research committee

Month 2-3: Complete IRB and fine-tune electronic data inquiry

Month 4-8: Perform manual chart review and data analysis. Meet with statistician to evaluate data and determine if further chart review is indicated.

Month 9-12: Author publication and prepare for submission to appropriate academic journal.

Month 12+: Publication edits or resubmission

It is expected that your project will be completed prior to resident program graduation.
